Hemorrhoids and Dietary Changes

There is no question that hemorrhoids inflict pain, itching and discomfort for those that are affected. And yet hemorrhoids are not limited to a small population in the world. Research studies have shown that as high as fifty to sixty percent of the world's population gets to deal with this painful situation at one time or the other during the course of their lives. Additionally, there seems to be a stigma associated with describing the pain associated with the excretory system and this keeps many people from even going to the doctor.

The first thing to do if you feel there is pain during bowel movements or if there is blood in the stool is to get medical attention immediately. These could be signs of potentially more serious health problems. If it has been diagnosed as being hemorrhoids, then in addition to the necessary medications that get prescribed, after consulting with your doctor making healthy dietary changes can go a long way in the battle with this painful condition.

It is necessary to keep the body well hydrated by drinking several glasses of clean water every day. Additionally, stool has to be kept softer so that there is no undue stress and pressure exerted on the walls of the colon and the area close to the rectum. This can be accomplished by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables. Plenty of soluble and insoluble fiber are present in fruits and vegetables and these are essential not only for good gastrointestinal health but they are important for the overall health and well being of the human body.

Dietary changes for keeping hemorrhoids at bay include staying away from harsh spices and extremely spicy food. It may feel good at the time of eating but the intestines get stressed by the consumption of these items. Staying away from foods that have too many preservatives and other man made additives is a step in the right direction. Consumption of healthy nuts such as almonds is also beneficial as long as you are not allergic to nuts. Almonds are a good source of healthy fats in addition to fiber, so they benefit other areas of the biological systems as well such as the circulatory system.

It is important to talk to your medical professional before embarking on a diet regimen to make sure you are not allergic to certain foods. Once that is done, a diet that is low in fats and rich in fiber and other nutrients can go a long way in keeping your system free from hemorrhoids.
