Gluten Intolerance: What It Is and Three Tips on How to Deal With It

Gluten Intolerance otherwise known as celiac disease, coeliac disease, celiac sprue, malabsorption syndrome or gluten-induced enteropathy is a sensitivity problem particularly by the gluten factor of protein found in grains, wheat, rye, oats, and barley.

When ingested by a child with gluten sensitivity, a toxic substance called "glutamine" is released which causes swelling and degeneration of the small intestines causing malabsorption of fat and deficiency of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K). In turn, the child would suffer from gluten intolerance symptoms such as steatorrhea (bulky, foul-smelling fatty stools), anemia and malnutrition.

Having the Celiac disease can be frustrating at first most especially for parents whose kids have such disease. But, with great knowledge and proper management, coping up will not be that difficult. Here are some tips to keep in mind to help you deal with gluten intolerance.

First, be knowledgeable about your disease. Information about the disease is needed for you to be able to take good care of your health. Know what are those included in your gluten free diet. These includes grains, corn, potatoes, rice, tapioca which is derived from cassava, starch sources such as amaranth, arrowroot, millet, montina, lupin, quinoa, sorghum, sweet potato, taro, teff, chia seed and yam. Various types of bean, soybean and nut flours are often used to add protein and fiber in the diet. Buckwheat and Gram flour is also acceptable.

Second, you must be careful with what you buy inside the grocery. Always check the labels and be a careful shopper. Ice cream, ketchup, packaged frozen foods, gravy, wheat flour and some other sauces do have gluten which is not suitable for persons with gluten intolerance.

Third, some over-the-counter or prescription drugs as well as cosmetics such as lip balms and lipsticks may also contain gluten. Before you use such cosmetics, take into consideration its compositions.

Although gluten intolerance is a disease wherein you can't eat all the things that you like, always put into mind that there are far more deadly diseases other than the Celiac disease. At least with this kind of disease, you won't be able to experience surgeries and chemotherapies just for you to get well.
